Social Responsibility
Poverty and health issues that exist in other countries should help make us more aware of these same issues in our own country and encourage us all to work together to make a difference regardless of our age, ability or advantage. The Next Generation definitely had the advantage of growing up and being raised by parents of influence. This advantage has given them the desire to want to continue trying to make a difference in the lives of people around the world. I think that everyone has the responsibility to make a difference. It has to start with becoming informed about the issues and not turning a blind eye. My Mom told me she had recently watched an episode of Oprah about a group of youth ambassadors from across North America that travelled to Kenya to make a difference by building a school. They came from various backgrounds and cultures. Their experiences in Kenya made them see that there were other things they could do to better the lives of those in Kenya. They raised money through various fundraisers to have a well dug to supply clean drinking water.
I think I have a responsibility to make a difference. I will soon be 18 years old which makes me an adult. I will need to become more responsible for myself and my decisions. I was raised to be tolerant of others and treat them with respect. My parents encouraged me to accept small jobs like grass cutting and snow removal. They told me it would be helping others and teach me the importance of having a good work ethic. Sometimes I would complain when I was phoned to do these jobs, but my parents would tell me that I wouldn’t keep getting called back if I wasn’t doing a good job and making a difference in the lives of the people that called me. I do think that people can make a difference when they take the time to learn about those who are less fortunate. If more people regardless of age, ability or advantage cared enough to try and make the world a better place, the world really would be a better place.
